“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” Rumi
Whirling is a form of meditation involving physical activity, which originated among Sufis and is still practiced by Dervishes or Semazen. It is a customary meditation performed within the Sema, or worship ceremony, through which Semazen aim to reach the source of all perfection by abandoning egos and personal desires, focusing on God, and spinning one’s body in repetitive circles, which has been seen as a symbolic imitation of planets in the solar system orbiting the sun.
The Sufi in this necklace is from Istanbul in an open fretwork, his skirts billowing around him, hung on a necklace of titanium coated black quartz nugget beads, accented with a Turkomen brass and enamel bead and a couple of coral nuggets add an extra point of interest. In between the black nuggets, little crystal beads catch the light. A lovely vintage Kuchi coin dangles from the back of the clasp.
The desire to create is the vehicle by which humans extend our souls and minds beyond the limits of our physical selves. Sometimes it is nice to work with the imperfections of nature than against it which is why I love rough nuggets, odd shaped beads, stones with natural markings on them and the ephemeral organic nature of uncut stones rather than materials that are well ordered into neat and tidy shapes. Each piece is made by hand and is a labour of love!
